Mackinac Island - August 2010

We had a wonderful weekend on Mackinac Island! The Grand Hotel is an amazing place. It is a cruise ship on land. I believe it has the world's longest covered porch. We were treated to a private carriage tour of the island. I am so glad we did that since we were able to see many beautiful sites and learned a lot about the island. Horses are taken off the island for winter. There are hardly any other animals on the island except for squirrels/chipmunks and people's pets. The occasional deer may wonder over the ice covered lakes during winter, but are transported off so they don't spook the horses. Emily especially loved the no car rule. The kids and I took Mark and Donna to Zingermans in Ann Arbor and Emily commented, "There are too many cars on this island." Thank you to Mimi and Papa Mark for treating us! The fudge was also amazing - that almost goes without saying.
